Well - I suppose by now a lot of you have heard the news. Speakeasy (Gatesville's former publisher) is no more. "How will this impact Patrick and Marc?" I hear you asking. Well, as luck would have it, we were already in the process of looking for another publisher when this happened. We had actually put production of issue #3 on hold while we sorted out the details.

At the moment, there are no plans to continue with The Gatesville Company, but neither are there any plans to STOP doing it, either. Simply put, we're on hold until such time as we can continue with the promise of a) making at least a little money and b) working with a reliable publisher.

We've got no hard feelings at all for Adam and the gang at Speakeasy. This business has chewed up and spit out a lot of people, and Speakeasy was neither the first nor last publisher to go under after a promising, if under funded, start. Personally, I only hope to see more publishers in the future who are willing to take a chance on "outsider" projects like Gatesville, things that are well crafted and entertaining, yet different from the mainstream comics fare.

Marc and I (Patrick, that is!) hope to see you all again soon, and hopefully on more projects together. We think we made a great team, and judging from the fantastic response we got from you, our readers, a lot of people agreed with us. With any luck, someday we'll get to see more of Cross, Boat, and Ms. Brand, and find out who they are and why they're in Gatesville.

I know that's the question on everyones lips these days. Well, mine at least. Here's the situation: due to an unfortunate oversight at Speakeasy, issue number 2 has been delayed. We were all hoping to have the book in your hands earlier in October, but right now the production problems have been addressed and the book is being rushed to the printer even as we speak! Watch this blog for further updates!

In the meantime, check out these preview pages from issue 2 - hopefully it will whet your appetite for more.

OK, so I wasn't able to get to a computer as often as I'd hoped during the con. Whatcha gonna do? I blame global warming.

It was a fun time. If anyone who stopped by the Speakeasy booth and bought a copy of Gatesville is reading this - thanks! As it turns out, the first issue won't be out until this Wednesday, so everyone at SD got to see it a week early. You are officially the coolest kids on the block, the envy of all the poor masses who won't get theirs until Wednesday.

Aside from meeting fans, fellow creators, and other "industry" folks, I also got to see the fine art show, and several panels and presentations. I met and chatted with Gene Colan, comics legend and really nice guy. I saw Rob Zombie talk about his new movie, John K. talk about new Ren and Stimpy, and Sergio Aragones prove that he's the fastest and funniest cartoonist of our lifetimes. I missed the Tenacious D concert, but I heard it was incredible.

By the time the con had ended, I'd been able to meet with a huge number of the creators of Speakeasy comics. These folks all seem to be really fun and nice and talented. I had a particularly entertaining time sitting next to Sebastian Caisse, writer of Grimoire, who is a really fun fellow. He draws very well, too!

I'll try to write some more when I'm a little less lagged from the trip. Suffice it to say for now, a great time was had by all and I hope to see you there next year.

Of course, I'll be hanging there a lot and folks at the booth will be happy to leave a message for me if you need to get in touch, so feel free to do so if you like. In addition, it looks like they've got every day filled up from 11am until at least 5pm with signings, and everyone seems to be doing at least two shifts, so you should be able to see all your favorite Speakeasy creators. And me too! See you there.
